Does an epidural for back pain make your back worse?I had an epidural for back pain and my pain has gotten worse?
I had it about 5 days ago and the paper the hospital gave me said it may take up to 2 weeks to see results. This is my 2nd shot for my pain. Any suggestions? I'm in severe pain and my pain medication hasn't been much help. Thanks!

Unfortuantely this can happen as the nerves are so inflamed. You should call your doctor in the am and make sure there is nothing else you can do. One little hint. Taking all the B vitamins (b100) meaning large dose, capsules, Calcium and Magnesium with Vit D (with food) can assist in aleviating back pain. Calcium and Magnesium relax smooth muscle and B Vitamins especially B6 Coat the nerves. Go to The store and get one of those wraps that give heat and leave it on for 24 hours it will help relieve the pain. Meditate and picture yourself being pain free and that you nerves are being healed and your muscles relaxed. I know all about pain as I had cancer in all the bones in my body including the spine and believe me there is nothing that can describe that kind of pain ..sooo I do understand.

Sorry to hear that you are in worse pain after having the epidural. I work for a chiropractor, and there are a number of patients who have had epidurals. Most seem to get a lot of relief, though I have heard a couple say that the epidural didn't help at all. It's true that it may take longer in some individuals to see results. Try contacting your doctor, maybe it would be a good idea to have him check the injection site also. Additionally, I would be careful using heat or ice for a prolonged period of time as I believe it can actually make inflammation worse. Try heat or ice for 20 minutes on, then 20 minutes off. I would definitely contact the doctor who is treating you, it won't hurt to see what he or she has to say.

I've had two epidurals and it didn't make the pain worse, but didn't help either. I would never do it again. Call your doctor and tell him that you are in severe pain. Only the doctor can help you with this.

I had 3 injections and none helped my pain enough to make me want to do them again. The day I would get them done I would be in extreme pain and could not function for the rest of the day. Even for the next 2-3 days I was limited in my movement and after that I felt no significant pain relief. They work great for some people, but not for me.

It sure can. I have been advised against it. I aready have a lot of nerve damage from herniated discs and severe spinal stenosis. I would not do any more. Have you had an MRI? Must be. Have you tried a chiropractor? They can do wonders for sure. Your best bet obviously would be if they can fix your problem but that as I know is not always possible. I have suffered for 30 years now and I know it is hard to deal with. You can't sleep for the pain and I've even lost all feeling in one leg for 5 months before. I would certainly look for an alternative to the injections. I've seen doctor after doctor and specialists in three states. The chiropractor gave me more relief then any of the other doctors without doubt.
