Low back pain while driving/sitting?I have low back pain between the sacrum and the coccyx. The muscles to the left tend to spasm. It was better for a while, but a few days ago it started hurting again when I was overdoing things.
I've had X-rays in the past so I know it's nothing dangerous like a slipped disk or pinched nerve.
When driving or even being a passenger the pressure (or even just sitting) the pain has been excruciating, so I've been trying to lie down mostly.
If I do need to be driving/driven, do you have suggestions for how I can make the trip more bearable? To take the pressure off the spine?
Is it okay that I'm in the car if it hurts that much? I mean, since the X-rays were fine, I don't have a big risk of further injuring the spine, right? Or should I be cautious and not be in the car until it feels better?
So far, I've been lying down alternating ice and heat, using lydocaine patches, and voltaren gel.

most seated surfaces fit 6'4" men with those long thighs that actually 'fit';; the key to sitting is to place your tailbone to the BACK of the chair..NOT the seat itself;; in the car, take OUT the lumbar support cuz they DON'T FIT YOU!!! you can try getting one of those gushy beaded tubes to place back there IF you feel the need (& it would HAVE TO go in the arch of your back..not just placed in the corner of the seat)..but place that back of the seat ERECT..not lying back..when you are sitting in that car the way you do (& trust me..EVERYONE does it)..you place all your weight right on that area that you are complaining about;; get the weight & subsequent pressure off & you'll be fine..the back of the seat straight up (you'll get used to this new position very quickly);; then ya gotta work on not getting too relaxed, cuase then your shoulders roll in front of you, your spine bends the wrong way, & again, the pressure goes right to the low back, & in your case, the sacral region..sit up, like your ma used to bop you on the ehad @ the kitchen table to get you to do...good luck!! just throwing it out there..but there MAY be a compression fracture back there on your sacrum..something that MAY not come up in an xray...but, I am not a doc, nor your's ..again, good luck!!

Sit in a chair. If your knees are higher than your waist, it will put pressure on your low back. Are you overweight? If so, lose the weight, slowly. Try to find some stretches online for back pain. But do them slowly and carefully. Lie down on your back on the floor. Just rest there and slowly push your low back down into the floor. Keep your hands down at your side. Hold the pressure for 15 seconds, do this about 3 times and 3 times a day. Stand in a hot shower, let the hot water (not scolding hot) hit your back. Bend over at the waist with knees locked (YES LOCK THE KNEES. YOU AREN'T LIFTING) but don't rush it, slowly bend toward the floor, with your arms and head hanging down. Try to grab your ankles or touch the floor with your finger tips, but only bend as far as the comfort will allow you. When you feel a slight pain, it at that position that you should stop and hold it there for about 15 seconds. After 15 seconds, slowly straighten back up. Do that 3 times. Then rest with that hot water hitting your back. Sleep on your side with your knees slightly bent up toward your waist. Take walks, slow walks. Eventually get into AB strengthening exercises. Do take some pain reliever and ask your doctor about muscle relaxer. Again, don't sit in a chair that causes your knees to be elevated above your waist, and that may be the problem with your your car seat. It may seat you too low. Don't do anything for a few days that strains, no stretches until you get the pain and inflamation down. Do, however, use the hot shower technique. I suffered with extreme low back pain for years. Left me having to gasp for air, literally. Lost weight. Did stretching. Lifted weights. Ab strengthening. Walk. Found a good chiropractor. Now I don't suffer with it. It took time, several years.
Good luck.
