What could be the cause of my intense pain in my upper back under the left side of my rib cage?I am 18 years old and 2 nights ago had a bad night of drinking alcohol. I was very hungover yesterday and my back pain started in my lower back, and moved to my upper left back below my shoulder blade but still under my rib cage. It feels like someone kicked me really hard in my kidney and it hurts very badly to take a deep breath. Could it be just muscle pain? or should I get it checked out by a doctor? I have taken Motrin regularly all today and it hasn't helped much.

I would say "a bad night of drinking alcohol" is a good reason to have kidney pain. Damage even. Alcohol is not good for the human body. Causes all kinds of damage.

alcohol can dehydrate you, which can affect your kidneys and a few other organs like your liver - your whole body really - but the kidneys a lot since they're in charge of regulating some of the liquids in your body. Try drinking plenty of water, and nothing else but water.
Also, could it be that something happened while you were drunk and you don't remember? If you notice any bruising or weird things like blood in your urine, then don't wait to get that looked at.
As for the Motrin, maybe you'd react better or aspirin or tylenol.
Ice or heat, or alternating, usually help ease pain as well. (If you notice brusing, use ice)
Hope you feel better!
