Alternate pain meds that dont cause sedation?My friend had a patient with intractable back pain a couple nights ago at a nursing home who became stuporous from too many pain medications. When she finally came out of it hours later she was very upset that she was in pain again and demanded pain meds. My friend did not want her to go into a stupor again and explained to her why he did not want to give anything. Well, he finally did after she demanded but later complained to another nurse that she did not want him to be her nurse anymore. What other meds could have been given that dont cause the patient to be too sedated where you would fear respiratory depression?

Unfortunately, all effective pain medications for severe back pain are opioid in nature and will cause sedation and respiratory depression. But she's in a nursing home. They are aware of what she is taking and should keep an eye on her.
