Back Pain Info:Four Year Old Fever Back/Chest Pain...?

Four Year Old Fever Back/Chest Pain...?My neice is four years old and suffers from Febrile Seizures. For the last four days she has had high fever and chest/back pain. She points to her chest but when I push on her back slightly it hurts her to. It is right on the edge of her ribs under the right arm. We have been alternating Tylenol and Motrin to keep the fever down. I took her to the E.R. and they said that she seemed fine to do what I have been doing. She is not caughing. Sinus' are fine. Her stomach does not hurt. Just fever... And pain... I do not understand this. She has recently come under my care and I am not sure what to do about this. It is the weekend right now and I plan to take her to the doctor on Monday. Any advice on what this could be and how urgent a doctor is needed will help me greatly! Thanks in advance.

Wow, that's tough. Is it possible to take her to another clinic or doctor before Monday? I know it would be tearing me apart knowing the little one was in pain and not being able to do much about it. If it were me I'd take her back in the next day and just say: "look, we were just here and was told she checked out ok but she's still complaining of pain and I need to do something for her right now".
You'd likely get a different doctor this time too so for what it's worth, at least you'd be getting a 2nd opinion.

warm showers will also help lower the fever. My son gets high fevers with seizures every so often and usually the doctors do not find a reason. I was told it was an immune system malfuntion and that all I needed to worry about is keeping the temp lower than 104 to prevent the seizure (most seizures happen if when temp is higher than 105 ) and to keep him comfortable usually this means long baths and lots of fever reducer for 4-5 days. If she doesn't get upset about it keep her in just her panties(clothes trap heat) inside the house and continue as you have been doing . If her ribs are hurting her think back did she fall and maybe hit them. Sometimes kids with the fever issues feel pain and achy just because of the fever but you never can tell. Make sure to keep her well hydrated with lots of gatoraid and water or koolaid. skip the sodas as they dehydrate the body Good Luck

It concerns me that the ER did not take better care of someone so young. Did they take xrays of the chest to chest for bronchitis or pneumonia? Did they do a cat scan of the chest to rule out a pulmonary embolism? Did they do an ultrasound of the chest to check for gallstones? This does not sound like a respiratory problem or a cold/flu. If the ER did not do any xrays, you need to make sure you tell the doctor you're seeing on Monday. If her fever spikes anymore, then you need to get to the hospital. If it's staying the same, I would continue what you are doing (as it's probably preventing a worse problem), and wait until Monday.

If she had a bad seizure that could be the cause of her back and chest pain..........because it could be a pulled muscle. The fever could be caused from a slight infection of some sort and I'm sure you know that a fever can cause a seizure so if she had a seizure that would explain it. If possible I'd take her back to the ER and demand that they admit her until she is doing better. If you are tough and persistent they will listen to you (trust me, my mother did this many times with me.) I don't know how much you know about seizures and the causes and effects of them but you are welcome to email me if you'd like to talk further or if you have questions. Take care, You and your niece will be in my prayers. God Bless you!! ps:if she aspirated during the seizure, this could also be why she has pain in her chest.
