Do I need a referral from my doctor to get an appointment to see a neurologist?
I am currently seeing my doctor for a number of things including neuropathy, diabetes and 2 herniated discs in my lower back. He has told me several times that he can not treat me for long term chronic pain yet has only referred me to a pain specialist who only does injections on my back and doesn't help with the pain for the neuropathy. I have explained to him numerous times that the injections aren't helping with the leg and feet throbbing pain due to the neuropathy. He still refuses to refer me to a neurologist and keeps telling me to go to the pain specialist.

Seriously, get a new doctor. Find someone who will actually LISTEN to you. Doctors who listen are out there, you just have to find them.

this might sound kind of strange, but have you been checked for a kidney infection? diabetics sometimes are prone to kidney infections and problems..especially with uncontrolled blood sugars..your kidneys are located on your lower back side..and can cause a lot of discomfort if an infection is untreated...just a thought..good luck...also, i've been diabetic for 41 years (type 1) and have had a kidney transplant.
