Obviously any sharp or deep pains, or pain in general in your back should be investigated further by your health practitioner. This sort of presentation is common with a dislocated or "popped" rib, possibly a rib fracture, thoracic subluxations (misalignments) and scoliosis. Aggravation of any of these conditions can occur from some sort of repetitious activity ie shoveling or lifting or from an impact injury, like in contact sports. Have you had any previous major injuries or back problems in the past? Is there any family history of any problems or conditions? Do you do sport or work that involves heavy lifting or strenuous activities? There is some important information that along with a more thorough examination and xray or MRI would provide a more in depth assessment of your individual condition. Without knowing your specific history or examining you its hard to guess at what might be causing your pain. If you haven't had any previous trauma or problems with your back it would be unusual for you to all of the sudden have this pain. If you are run down or under an abnormal amount of stress that could contribute to your problem also. See your doctor for a full medical history and examination.
