What causes lower back aches before period?

What causes lower back aches before period?I should be getting my period within the next 3 days. For the past 2 days my lower back (on the left side) has been aching and my leg has been cramping up. What is the cause of lower back aches before a period? And does anyone else get this?

The lower back pain is caused by an expanding uterus, which as a result pushes against your spine causing lower back pain. I experience it with every period, however, not on one side over the other. Generally my whole lower back hurts. I have found that heat and walking helps a lot. If you are looking for a medicated cure, midol seems to work nicely for me. Hope this helped
