Well back pain can be caused be a couple of different things..
1.) Congenital anatomical problem- i.e. scoliosis, other spine and structural problems
2.) Childbirth (but if you're a guy then this obviously can't be a reason lol)
3.) Trauma (any old injuries? car accidents? falls or such?)
4.) Being too heavy (overweight/obese)
So basically if you have weight problems then losing weight will help A LOT.
If you had an injury in the past or a fall, bring it to your doc's attention..
Also, have him check for any structural problems. MRI's show only tissue.. Xrays and cat scans will show the bones clearly.
If all of those things get ruled out, then you can try using a massage therapist and also physical therapy. Massage therapy and acupuncture for back pain are great.
As for pain meds.. yea they are great I had a car accident and I was on narcotics for a while and they make you feel great lol but they can get really addictive so if you do have a problem you should try to work on it (denial is bad)... try to wean yourself off the drugs little by little.
But if you don't have a problem and the doctor doesn't believe you.. don't stress out. Doctors can be kinda stupid sometimes and they always think that if they can't figure something out then the person must be lying (cause they're really narcissistic lol), so don't worry about what your doctor thinks. Just try to cure yourself.. maybe you can ask your doctor (or start going to a diff doc) for pain meds that are stronger than the OTC kind but milder than addictive narcotics. Soma is a good muscle relaxer and doesn't give the "high" that lots of doctors want to avoid giving their patients.
If none of that helps, then you can try to go to a pain specialist cause sometimes pain really can be difficult to manage.
Good luck!

it's a good chance that you are having muscle spasms. They would not show up on an mri. Try laying on a heating pad as hot as you can stand it without burning yourself for 20 minutes every couple of hours when possible. I've had back problems for 15 years, it finally came to a head last year when I had to have a lumbar spinal fusion. I really hope for your sake it's muscle spasms, your back will never be the same after surgery. Physical therapy might also help you, it help my muscle spasms, but I had 2 herniated discs as well, so physical therapy could only help so much. I hope I helped you some and I really do hope you feel better.

You probably don't need the prescription pain medicine if nothing came up on the mri. Your doctor will probably take away the prescription. You should try icy hot patches.

"Mr E" suggests an "HIO" chiropractor. This is his suggestion for practically every question he answers.
"HIO" Chiropractors are considered such ridiculous quacks even mainstream chiropractors laugh at them. "HIO" chiropractors believe ALL disease (OK — 95%) is due to a misalignment of a single (topmost) vertebra. ALL their treatments for ALL diseases and maladies involve manipulations of this single vertebra at the top of the spine.
Maybe you should see a Physiatrist (note the spelling), who may suggest seeing as Physiotherapist (Physical Therapist). Stay out of the clutches of any HIO chiropractic quack — or even any other chiropractor.
If you're in the USA, and you like the bone-cracking stuff, see an Osteopathic Physician. Outside the USA, osteopaths are ill-trained cranks.
