How can I stop or relieve back spasms?I have chronic back pain along with nightly back spasms ( the spasms are so bad I will jerk like I'm being punched ) I would like to try and find a way to relieve my symptoms without having to take medicine. I've been diagnosed with degenerative disc and a bulging disc in my lower back and have bone growths on my upper spinal column. Any suggestions on relieve would be great, I have been to a doctor but with no insurance that gets kinda expensive.

Well, I think it is important that you are relaxed at all times. I know that sounds difficult because of all the things that we live everyday, but you just have to learn to take them day by day.
I used to suffer from spasms too, especially when I got really stressed about something: school, recitals, plays, interviews, even first dates. It was ridiculous and though everybody told me I should learn to control it, I couldn't which made me feel not only sick but stupid. The spasms were so strong, I couldn't even breath right. I would hyperventilate a lot. I couldn't lay down, or sit down, or walk, or stand up without it hurting.
So after I went to the doctor, he taught me to do breathing exercises: inhale deeply with your nose, exhale with your mouth and while you do it, make sure that the air inflates your stomach, not your chest. If you see a baby breath, that's the way they do it, that is correct way to breath but we have gotten used to inflating our chest or back. I promise you, that will help you a great deal because you will feel more relaxed and you'll be in control of your spasms. They'll still be there, but they'll be much less painful than if you didn't do anything about it.
So that is my answer for you. Breathing exercises and visits to my chiropractor were the 2 things that completely got rid of the pain. Now when I have muscular spasms, I just do the breathing exercises and if I feel too tense/stressed, I go to the chiropractor and I feel better after he pops me from head to toe. =)
