Pilates hurts my back?

Pilates hurts my back?I just tried pilates for the first time today. My muscles are fine, apart from my lower back - it hurts!

Is this a sign i've been doing them wrong, or is this normal? I don't really get back pain.

I think it means you've been doing them wrong. When I've done pilates and had back ache afterwards it is because I hadn't had my 'core' strength right.

That comes with practice though and if today was the first time, then it is probably because your stomach muscles aren't very strong yet.

If you're doing a class, speak to the instructor about it and if you're doing a home DVD, just take a moment each time to make sure you've got the stomach muscles right before starting, and if you start to shake before the exercise has finished, just finish it early - you'll get stronger.

Yes I think you need to check your technique very closely with an instructor, it can be quite difficult at first to get this right. When performed correctly pilates should not cause any pain at all, and your muscles should not hurt afterwards either.
