back pain after epidural for herniated disc?My mother just had a epidural for her herniated disc about a week ago. she came home from work today barely able to walk or even sit. she is in a incredible amount of pain, and she does not know why.
Does anyone know why she is in pain so soon after the epidural and what course of action should we pursue? Please and Thank you.

I've had these before. She should NOT have pain like this from the ESI so long afterward. She has probably aggravated the disk that is pinching the Sciatic nerve. Since its been more than 24 hours.. she can use heat on the area to help with the pain.. but if its Red and swollen.. use ICE. That will help immensely. If she has any old Prednisone left over ..that will take down some inflamation.
She probably has Pain meds as she's undoubtedly seeing a PM doctor. Taking those will help lessen the pain a lot.. but she shouldnt wait until its out of control terrible because it takes MORE to get it back down than if she controlled it before it got bad.
But.. odds are she over exerted herself because she was feeling better.. Tell her I hope she feels better soon... I'm in the exactly the same boat as she is.

Epidural injections can be very tricky. I had one that was so painful that the injection itself caused me to pass out. Consider what's involved: a rigid catheter is inserted into the spine and a needle placed within the tube to deliver the steroid. If the catheter passes through or displaces muscle tissue, the pain - independent of the problem for which the injection is targeted - can be substantial. Hopefully she's just sore from that insertion. The MD should be following her closely, examine the site for inflammation and prescribe oral pain meds if necessary. Without such inflammation, one week does seem to long for a reaction to the injection.
